If Windows shows the error 0xC004F050 when you try to activate, it usually means the product key cannot be accepted by the edition of Windows currently installed on the device.
This often happens when you are trying to activate Windows Pro on a computer that is still running Windows Home. In this situation, the system must first be upgraded to the correct edition before your purchased key can be activated.
Before You Start #
Disconnect the computer from the internet completely before following the steps below.
Turn off:
- Wi-Fi
- Any connected network cable
This is important because Windows should perform the edition upgrade first, rather than trying to activate the upgrade key immediately.
1. Open Activation Settings #
- Go to the Windows activation page.
Windows 11:
Start > Settings > System > Activation
Windows 10:
Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation
2. Start the Upgrade With a Generic Key #
- Select Change product key and enter this generic Windows Pro upgrade key:
VD4D4-NDBGX-MTQ2D-G2D9B-F9CKG
This key is used only to start the upgrade process. It does not permanently activate Windows.
3. Finish the Upgrade to Windows Pro #
- Continue through the normal upgrade process.
- Windows will now switch to the Pro edition so the system matches the license type you purchased.
4. Activate With Your Own Product Key #
- After the upgrade is complete, go back to Activation Settings and choose Change product key again.
- Enter the product key you received when you purchased Windows.
- This will complete the activation and properly license the device.
The generic upgrade key is a Microsoft-supported key used only to move from Windows Home to Windows Pro. It is free to use for the upgrade step, but it does not replace your purchased product key.
Once the edition upgrade has been completed and your original key has been entered, Windows should activate correctly and the 0xC004F050 error should no longer appear.
