Features #
Both OEM and Retail versions offer the same features, updates, and functions, providing the full Windows experience.
Hardware Changes #
With a Retail license, you can replace any part of your computer. An OEM license, however, only allows you to replace all parts except the motherboard, as the license is tied to it.
Upgrades #
Upgrading from Home to Pro is only possible with a Retail license.
License Transfers #
A Retail license can be moved to another computer (one at a time), while an OEM license is tied to the activated computer and cannot be transferred.
Support #
Retail license holders can contact Microsoft Support for help with hardware compatibility or other issues, if the product still is supported by Microsoft. OEM license holders will be referred to their device manufacturer for assistance.
